Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Ulva

Ulva.-- island and quoad sacra par., Kilninian and Kilmore par., Inner Hebrides, Argyllshire, off the W. coast of Mull - quoad sacra par. (comprising the islands of Ulva, Gometra, Little Colonsay, and Staffa, and part of Mull), pop. 166; island, 11 miles SW. of Aros, pop. 53; P.O., called Ulva Ferry. The island is 5 miles in length from E. to W., and has a maximum breadth of 21/3 miles. Its surface rises to an extreme alt. of 1400 ft., and in some parts is distinguished for grand basaltic colonnades. Ulva House, seat, is situated near Ulva Ferry.
