Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for CHARFORD (North)

CHARFORD (North), a parish in Fordingbridge district, Hants; on the river Avon, at the verge of the county, 6½ miles SSE of Salisbury r. station. Post Town, Downton, under Salisbury. Acres, 570. Real property, £1,045. Pop., 70. Houses, 15. It was known to the Saxons as Cerdicesford; and is said to have taken that name from Cerdic having formed his court at or near it, on the founding of Wessex. It has no ecclesiastical status; and its church is in ruins.
