Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for ORWELL (The)

ORWELL (The), a tidal river, or narrow estuary, in Suffolk; really the lower or seaward reach of the river Gipping; commencing at Ipswich; and extending about 10 miles south-eastward to a junction with the mouth of the estuary of the Stour at Harwich. It has nowhere awidth of more than a mile; it makes one bend 2 miles below Ipswich, and another 6 miles further on, with theeffect of looking like a lake throughout the intermediate distance; it is flanked, along both sides, with ornate landscape, including gardens, parks, and mansions; and it was eulogised by Drayton as the "princely river."
