Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for OLDHAM, ASHTON-UNDER-LYNE, and GUIDE-BRIDGE RAILWAY

OLDHAM, ASHTON-UNDER-LYNE, and GUIDE-BRIDGE RAILWAY, a railway in the S E of Lancashire; connecting the places named in its title, and consisting of five parts. The first part is 4 miles and 7yards long; commences in a junction with the Oldhambranch of the Northwestern, at Oldham station, and terminates in a junction with the Ashton and Staleybridgebranch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire. The second part is 1 mile, 3 furlongs, 17 yards long; commences ina junction with the Ashton and Staleybridge branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire at Peccaties; and terminates in a junction with the Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincolnshire, at Guide-Bridge. The third part is 2furlongs, 6 chains, 17 yards long; commences in a junction with the first part, in Ashton parish; and terminatesnear the service-reservoir of Ashton water-works. The fourth part is 5 furlongs, 8 chains, 11 yards long; commences in a junction with the first part, near Wood Lane; and terminates near Moss colliery. The fifthpart is 2 furlongs, 6 chains, 8 yards long; commences ina junction with the first part, near Lower Allhill; and terminates in Rochervale. The system was authorized in 1857, on a capital of £140,000 in shares, and £46, 600 in loans; was opened in Aug., 1861; and was vestedmutually in the Northwestern and the Manchester and Sheffield, at 4¾ per cent., in 1862.
