  1. This table was generated from data held in the following tables from the Census.

  2. The table covers England, Wales and Scotland.

Notes:

  1. The microdata gathered by different censuses was essentially identical: the nunber of persons in each household relative to the number of rooms, the latter excluding bathrooms, etc. However, the way the data was then tabulated in the reports varied substantially. ALL the data included here, with the exception of 1911, are overall counts of numbers in different density categories, rather than being based on the matrices of persons versus rooms sometimes published. In all cases, the data are counts of numbers of persons in each category, not numbers of households.
  2. Although it is possible to base this table largely on counts of persons, it is not possible to present exactly the same data for different dates because the density category thresholds varied substantially over time. In particular, in 1931 and 1951 the Scottish censuses used as their lowest density category "under 2 persons per room", while from 1971 onwards the highest density category was "over 1.5 persons per room". The main set of categories used here redistrict but to do NO re-classification: for each census year and nation, they are exactly the categories that were included in the published table, and leaves all other columns empty. However, we then compute, wherever possible, two sets of simplified categories which are used in the Vision of Britain system. Note that the central bands in each system are identical to bands in the original set, but are included for completeness::
    • The first and main set, which can be computed for all dates for England and Wales but only in 1911 and from 1971 onwards for Scotland, includes "Under 1 person per room", "1 to 1.5 persons per room" and "over 1.5 persons.
    • The second or "high" set is the only system possible for Scotland in 1931 and 1951, and includes "Under 2 persons per room", "2-3 persons" and "over 3 persons".
  3. The table includes data for all modern local authorities in Great Britain, all current counties in England, plus totals for Regions, Wales, Scotland, "England and Wales" and Great Britain. The differences between the categories used in England and Wales and in Scotland mean that the Great Britain data are available only for the simplified categories, and even then are incomplete; the main set of simplified categories are missing for 1931 and 1951, and the "high" versions are missing for 1971 onwards.
  4. Later source tables include figures for New Towns and Conurbation Centres. These have been ignored in this table as the figures for these units are included in the Local Government Districts.
  5. Two units appear in the geography conversion tables which do not appear in the source tables.
    • Nottingham Shire Hall RD (10474620) in 1931. This unit has an odd status, relates to a single building and is only sometimes included in Census reports.
    • Kirkby UD (10173620) in 1961. This unit was created in 1958 from part of 2 RDs but does not appear to have an entry in the housing table.
    .
  6. As far as we can discover, the Scottish census in 2001 did not publish counts of persons, only of households. We have estimated these data by adding counts of households for both 1991 and 2001; then estimating counts of persons in 2001 by assuming that they had the same relationship to the counts of households in 2001 as the two counts had for the same district in 1991; then adjusting the resulting estimates of density categories so they summed to the actual total number of persons in 2001 for the district, this being reported elsewhere.

Columns within table:

ColumnTypeContents
area_type Text string (max.len.=16). Type of row: "DISTRICT" = data are for a Local Authority District, "MOD_CNTY" = data are for a current county (these exist only in England), "GOR" = data are for a Government Office Region, "NATION" = data are overall totals for England and Wales, or Scotland, or Great Britain.
nation Text string (max.len.=6). Nation unit within. Defined as "EW" for England and Wales", "S" for Scotland.
nat_source Text string (max.len.=28). Appears only for rows which are national totals, and then identifies how they were derived. This will ideally be "Reported_total".
area_code Text string (max.len.=18). ONS ID for the 2011 Local Authority District.
area_name Text string (max.len.=40). Name of the 2011 Local Authority District.
g_unit Integer number. GBHGIS ID number for the 2011 Local Authority District as defined in the AUO.
geogcode_1991 Text string (max.len.=9). This column holds the census office identifier for the district as used in 1991, but only if we know the district had the same boundaries in 1991 and 2011. This is currently set only for the London Boroughs.
year Integer number. Calendar year the data are for.
pop_hhold Floating point number. Total number of persons in households..
count_under_050 Floating point number. Total population in all households living at less then 0.5 persons per room. Reported in 1961 (E&W only), 1971, 1991, 2001 and 2011. Data for Scottish districts in 2001 are estimates; see note.
count_050_to_100 Floating point number. Total population in all households living at over 0.5 and under 1 persons per room. Reported in 1991, 2001 and 2011. Data for Scottish districts in 2001 are estimates; see note.
