In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Glencorse like this:

Glencorse, par. and ry. sta., on Glencorse Burn, in co. and 14¼ miles S. of Edinburgh by rail, 4257 ac., pop. 1500; contains Glencorse Barracks (formerly Greenlaw Military Prison) and Glencorse House, seat; Glencorse Burn is an affluent of the North Esk.
