In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described New Monkland like this:
Monkland, New, par. and vil., N. Lanarkshire, on North Calder Water - par. (containing Airdrie), 19,885 ac., pop. 27,816; vil.,l½ mile NW. of Airdrie, pop. (including Glenmavis) 369; Monkland is rich in coal and ironstone; Monkland Well, a chalybeate spring, was formerly famous.
