In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Rattray like this:

Rattray.-- town (police burgh) and par., Perthshire - par., 5382 ac., pop. 3051; town and police burgh, on river Ericht, opposite Blairgowrie, pop. 2533; the town comprises the vils. of New Rattray; P.O; and Old Rattray; P.O.; flax and jute spinning is carried on.
