Annan  Dumfries Shire

In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Annan like this:

Annan.-- par., parl. and royal burgh, seaport, and market town, S. Dumfries-shire, on river Annan, near its mouth, 12 miles SE. of Dumfries by rail -- par., 10,915 ac., pop. 5516; parl. burgh, pop. 3366: royal burgh, pop. 4523; 3 Banks, 1 newspaper. Market-day, Friday. It is an ancient town, and was the residence of the Bruce family. ...

It carries on mfrs. of cotton and ropes, and has some shipping, and the port is sometimes called Annan-Waterfoot. Edward Irving (1792-1834), the famous preacher, was born here. The burgh unites with Dumfries, Lochmaben, Sanquhar, and Kirkcudbright in returning 1 member to Parl.
