In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Errol like this:

Errol, par. and vil. with ry. sta., E. Perthshire -- par. 9507 ac., pop. 2421; vil., near river Tay, 1 mile S of sta., which is 10½ miles E. of Perth and 10¼ W. of Dundee, pop. 890; P.O., called Errol Village, and P.O., T.O. at sta., called Errol; 1 Bank; has chemical works, and an engineering and machine-making establishment, and is the centre of business for a considerable part of the Carse of Gowrie; gives the title of earl to the Hays; in vicinity of vil. is Errol Park.
