In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Horndean like this:

HORNDEAN, a village on the W border of Hants; on the edge of Bereforest, 3 miles WNW of Rowlandscastle r. station, and 4 N by W of Havant. It has a head post office; ‡ and it gives an alternative name to Catherington district.
