In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Pollokshields like this:

Pollokshields, police burgh and quoad sacra par. with ry. sta., Govan par., Renfrewshire, in SW. suburbs of Glasgow - quoad sacra par., pop. 6523; police burgh, pop. 2104. Pollokshields was made a police burgh in 1876, and is almost entirely occupied by detached villa residences.
