In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Ailsa Craig like this:
Ailsa Craig, rocky island, Firth of Clyde, Dailly par., Ayrshire, 10 miles W. of Girvan, alt. 1114 ft., pop. 29; has a lighthouse 35 ft. high, with flashing right 60 ft, above high water and seen 13 miles.
