In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Clatford like this:
CLATFORD, a tything in Preshute parish, Wilts; 1 ½ mile SW of Marlborough. Pop., 90. A priory, subordinate to Caux abbey in Normandy, was founded here at the Conquest by Sir Roger Mortimer. A cromlech, about 10 feet high, called the Devil's Den, is in the winding vale of Clatford Bottom.
