Descriptive gazetteer entries

In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Orford Ness like this:

Orford Ness, promontory, on coast of Suffolk, at N. extremity of Hollesley Bay, 2½ miles SE. of Orford town; Orfordness High Lighthouse is 99 ft. high, with fixed light 91 ft. above high water and seen 17 miles; Orfordness Low Lighthouse is 72 ft. high, with fixed light 60 ft. above high water and seen 14 miles.

This is the only descriptive gazetter entry we have found, but you may be able to find further references to Orford Ness by doing a full-text search here.
