In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Esk like this:

Esk, river, Edinburghshire; is formed by the confluence of the North Esk and the South Esk in Dalkeith Park, and flows 3½ miles N. to the Firth of Forth at Musselburgh.
