Clonmel.-- market and assize town, municipal bor., and par., cos. Tipperary and Waterford, on river Suir, 28 miles NW. of Waterford and 135 miles SW. of Dublin by rail-par., 9017 ac., pop. 2157; town and mun. bor., 331 ac., pop. 9325; 4 Banks, 2 newspapers. Market-days, Tuesday and Saturday. ...
C. is the co. town of co. Tipperary, and is situated chiefly within that co., in the centre of a fertile district. The river Suir is navigable hence to Waterford; and a considerable export trade in corn and provisions is carried on. The trade in butter is very important, 40,000 firkins and upwards being disposed of annually. There is a well-endowed school. C. gives the title of Earl and Viscount to the family of Scott. Lawrence Sterne (1713-1768), author of Tristram Shandy. was a native. The bor. returned 1 member until 1885.
