In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Charleville like this:
Charleville.-- market town, Rathgoggan par., N. co. Cork, 34 m. N. of Cork and 130 m. SW. of Dublin by rail, 72 ac., pop. 2266; 3 Banks. Market-days, Wednesday and Saturday. The town is situated 1 mile W. of the ry. sta., in a rich and fertile district, on a small stream called the Glynn. ...
It owes its rise to the first Earl of Orrery, who in honour of Charles II. changed its name of Rathgoggan to Charleville; the same nobleman founded and endowed a school here. C. gave his title to the Earl of Charleville until 1875, when, on the death of the fifth Earl, the title became extinct.
