Athole.-- dist., N. Perthshire, at S. base of Grampian mountains, area 450 sq. m. It is one of the best Scotch hunting dists., its forest containing 100,000 ac., in which red-deer and roe-deer are estimated to number over 8000 head. The ducal title, herd by the ancient house of Murray, was created in 1703.
