Portaferry, market and seaport town, Ballyphilip par., E. co. Down, on E. side of entrance of Lough i Strangford, 8 miles NE. of Downpatrick and 17 miles SE. of Newtownards, pop. 1647; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Saturday. Portaferry has considerable trade in coal, timber, and grain, and a productive herring fishery.
