Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Portsoy

Portsoy, seaport town and quoad sacra par. with ry. sta., Fordyce par., Banffshire - quoad sacra par., pop. 2313; town, 8½ miles W. of Banff, pop. 2091; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks, 1 newspaper. Portsoy ranks as a creek under Banff, and carries on trade coastwise and with the Baltic. A number of the inhabitants are engaged in the fisheries. There is an extensive distillery (Glenglassaugh) in the neighbourhood. Portsoy was made a burgh of barony in 1550; the Earl of Seafield is the superior.
