Dean.-- dist. in W. of Edinburgh, pop. 5039; has a distillery; includes the vil. of Dean, dating from the time of David I., on Water of Leith, which here flows through a deep ravine crossed by the Dean Bridge, of 4 arches (each 96 ft. in span), 447 ft. long, 39 wide, and 106 above the bed of the stream.
