Kirkham.-- market town, par., and township, with ry. sta. N. Lancashire, 9 miles NW. of Preston and 219 miles from London--par., 45,429 ac., pop. 13,805; township and town, 857 ac., pop. 3840; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Tuesday. Kirkham is a well-built town, and is under the Local Government Act; it is generally regarded as the capital of the Fylde district, and is a seat of petty and special sessions. The grammar school was founded in 1658, and is richly endowed. Cotton and flax are the mfrs. of the town, and there are 3 annual fairs for cattle.
