Rhayader*, market town and par. with ry. sta., Radnorshire, on river Wye, 14 miles S. of Llanidloes by rail, 188 ac., pop. 890; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-days, Wednesday and Saturday. Rhayader is a centre for tourists; it was originally called Rhayader-Gwy, that is, "the cataract on the Wye;" had a castle built in 1178, and demolished during the Civil War; had also a cell to Strata Florida abbey. Rhayader formed one of the Radnor District of Parliamentary Boroughs, which returned 1 member until 1885.
