Silloth, seaport town and watering-place. Holme Cultram par., Cumberland, on the Solway Firth, 22¼ miles W. of Carlisle by rail, pop. 2116; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Silloth dates from 1855, when it was selected, on account of its good anchorage ground, as the port of Carlisle, a position till that time held by Port Carlisle. A railway and a wet dock of 4 ac. were then constructed, and a considerable trade quickly sprang up with Liverpool, Dublin, and the Isle of Man, the principal export being coal, and the principal import grain. A new dock of 6 ac. wa,s opened in 1885. The mild, equable, and salubrious climate of Silloth has caused it to become a health-resort.
