Skibbereen, market and seaport town with ry. sta., Creagh and Abbeystrowry pars., SW. co. Cork, on river Hen, 54 miles SW. of Cork, pop. 3631; P.O., T.O., 3 Banks, 1 newspaper. Market-days, Wednesday and Saturday. Has extensive retail business, and considerable trade in corn and other agricultural produce. The river is navigable for small vessels to the town, and for larger ones as far as Old Court, 3 miles further down. (For shipping statistics, see Appendix.)
