Mountrath, small market town with ry. sta., Clonenagh par., W. Queen's co., on an affluent of the Nore, 8 miles SW. of Maryborough and 60 miles SW. of Dublin, pop. 1865; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-days, Tuesday and Saturday. The town is situated nearly 3 miles N. of the sta. There are extensive flour mills in the town and neighbourhood. The earldom of Mountrath held by the Coote family, whose seat (Ballyfin House) is adjacent, became extinct in 1802.
