Dalkeith, market town and par. with ry. sta., in co. and 6½ miles SE. of Edinburgh and 382 miles NW. of London -- par., 2344 ac., pop. 7707; town, pop. 6931; P.O., T.O., 4 Banks, 1 newspaper. Market-day, Thursday; is one of the largest grain markets in Scotland, and has corn-mills, iron-foundries, a brass-foundry, &c. The church, an old Gothic edifice, was originally the castle chapel. Dalkeith Palace, adjacent, is one of the principal seats of the Duke of Buccleuch. It was erected in 1700, on the site of an old castle, the residence of the Earl of Morton, from whom the estate of Dalkeith was purchased by Buccleuch in 1642.
