Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for LINE, or LEVEN (THE)

LINE, or LEVEN (THE), a river of the NE of Cumberland. It rises in several head-streams adjacent to the boundaries with Northumberland and Scotland; and runs about 18 miles in the direction of SW by W, past Stapleton, Kirklinton, and West Linton, to the river Esk, near the latter's influx to the head of the Solway frith.
