BETTWS-Y-COED, a village, a parish, and a subdistrict, in the district of Llanrwst and county of Carnarvon. The village stands at the terminus of the Llanrwst railway, 3½ miles S of Llanrwst; has a post office under Llanrwst, a r. station with telegraph, and an inn; and is a resort of anglers and artists. A curious picturesque bridge, called Pont-y-Pain, spans the Llugwy here, over a cataract which is notable as a salmon-leap. The parish comprises 3,537 acres. Real property, £1,447. Pop., 509. Houses, 103. The property is all in one estate. Some fine scenery, with several good waterfalls, occurs in the vales and on the hills. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Bangor. Value, £101. Patron, the Bishop of Bangor. The church is ancient and good; and contains a monument of Gryffydd, grandnephew of the last Llewelyn. There are an Independent chapel and a Calvinistic Methodist chapel.-The subdistrict comprises four parishes and part of another. Acres, 35,118. Pop., 2,735. Houses, 558.
