STOUR (The), a river of Kent; rising 2½ miles N of Hythe; running west-north-westward to Ashford; going thence northwest ward, past Canterbury, to Stourmouth; and proceeding thence, first eastward, next in a detour past Sandwich, to Pegwell bay near Ebbsfleet. It has a total course of about 40 miles.
