NETTLECOMBE, a parish in Williton district, Somerset; 3 miles S W of Williton r. station, and 6½ N by W of Wiveliscombe. It contains the hamlets of Baggearn-Huish, Egypt, Coulton, Clitsome, Harpers, Holcombe-Water, Torr, Slade, Vample-Cross, Yean, and Wood ford; and its post town is either Bicknoller or Williton, under Taunton. Acres, 2, 800. Real property, with Wood-Advent, £4, 395. Rated property of N. alone, £3, 264. Pop., 327. Houses, 69. The property is divided among a few. The manor, with Nettlecombe Court, belongs to Sir W. Trevelyan, Bart. N.-C. is a very fine mansion; contains a grant deed of N. estate of the time of Henry II., a miniature portrait of Charles I. worked with hisown hair, and many other curiosities; and stands amidextensive and beautiful grounds, in which is a beechmeasuring 17 feet in girth. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Bath and Wells. Value, £500.* Patron, Sir W. Trevelyan, Bart. The church consists of nave, aisles, and chancel, with porch and tower; and is good. There is a national school.
