Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for NESTON (Great)

NESTON (Great), a small town and a township in Neston parish, Cheshire. The town stands on the coast of the Dee estuary, and on the Hooton and Parkgatebranch railway, 10 miles N W of Chester; is a seat ofpetty sessions, and of a court leet and court baron; and has a post-office‡ under Chester, a railway station, a court-house, a church, a Wesleyan chapel, and national schools. The railway terminates in its N W vicinity, at Parkgate, and was completed toward the end of 1866. The church is of the 10th or of the 11th century; has been much defaced by successive alterations; consists of nave, aisles, and chancel, with a tower; and contains anancient font, an old register chest, and numerous monuments. A weekly market is held on Friday; and cattle-fairs are held on 2 Feb., 29 May, and 29 Sept. The township comprises 1, 303 acres of land, and 1, 260 ofwater. Real property, £7, 451.
