Summary statistics and interpretative text about each General Election 1833-2005
Approx. number of rows:

Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:

Chronology:
The data cover the period 1881 to 1911.

Sources:

  1. This table combines basic summary statistics about each General Election, abstracted from a variety of reference books including Craig, with explanatory text written by Humphrey Southall.

Notes:

  1. This table exists to support the presentation of election results in the Vision of Britain site, and in particular within the statistical atlas. That presentation differs from other political themes in two ways. Firstly, we hold data for each by-election but it makes not sense to map it, so we need a separate list which defines which dates were General Elections. Secondly, elections were contests between named parties with local and national victors.
  2. Note that the statistics held here are NOT a summary of the results for individual constituencies we hold elsewhere, as the overall results of UK elections for much of the period depended in part on what happened in Irish constituencies which were not covered by the reference books we computerised for constituency-level data.
