The data cover the period 1881 to 1911.

  1. The "places" table has been built up by the Great Britain Historical GIS Project over many years, and although the methods used are summarised below there has been much manual editing and various subjective decisions, so it needs to be treated as primary data.

  1. The first version was created in 2004 by systematically querying the original version of the AUO roughly as follows:
    • Begin by selecting all urban local government districts which existed in 1911 as an initial master set of places, and associate with them as many as possible of the other units in the system for the same "place"; for examples, the parishes associated with the town, the earlier Registration District/Poor Law Union of the same name, the Rural District covering the surrounding rural area, and so on.
    • Next add those urban local government districts which did not exist in 1911, and similarly associate other units.
    • Repeat for Civil Parishes which were not already associated with one of the the "urban" places, so adding in most villages.
    • Analoguous procedures were followed for Scotland.
  2. However, the places table which now exists has been subject to much manual tidying, for example finding "places" which had been defined from parishes called "XXXX RURAL" and merging them with "XXXX", or by identifying parishes/places in very close proximity distinguished only by a saint's dedication, as at Sawtry.
  3. It was then very substantially extended by various strategies:
    • Working manually through units in the AUO which were not already associated with places, and creating new places to which they could be linked. For example, adding small settlements which gave their names only to an Ecclesiastical Parish.
    • Finding settlements which had never given their names to any administrative unit but which had a descriptive gazetteer entry above some length threshold.
    • Working systematically through travel narratives defining additional "places" for the locations visited. This led to a substantial number of country estates/stately homes being added.

Columns within table:

g_place Integer number. Number identifying the place: originally created from a sequence number.
g_name Text string (max.len.=404). Primary name of the place. In the original construction, this would be the preferred name of the unit the place was defined from, but these names have been substantially revised and are now, in general, the most commonly used name for the place from across the range of sources we hold.
seed_unit Integer number. The unit ID from the AUO for the unit from which the place was originally defined (see above). Null for many of the more recently defined places.
g_state Integer number. ID number of the state containing the place; mostly the ID for the United Kingdom.
