Sources:

  1. This table is a complete transcription of tables 20 ('Total Tenements, and Tenements of less than five rooms, distinguishing those occupied by various numbers of persons, in Municipal Boroughs and other Urban Districts, 1901') and 21 ('Total Tenements, and Tenements of less than five rooms, distinguishing those occupied by various numbers of persons, in Rural Districts, 1901'), in the individual county reports of the 1901 census. NB the urban and rural tables are absolutely identical in structure.

Notes:

  1. Definition of a tenement: The General Report of the 1901 census [Cd. 2174] describes (p.39) tenements as 'separate occupations', and notes that in both 1891 and 1901 there were 112 tenements to each 100 inhabited houses. It comments that 'having regard to the considerable proportion of tenemented houses in large towns, it is surprising that the excess of separate tenements is not greater, but the proportion being almost identical in 1891 and 1901, there appears to be no sufficient reason for doubting its approximate accuracy'.
  2. The field 'tot_u5' was not transcribed, but computed from the totals for 1, 2, 3 and 4 room tenements after the data had been loaded.
  3. This table was originally called hous1901 and was a combination of the English and Welsh data. This was amended in February 2010 and is now called h_dens_1901_ew to reflect more accurately the area covered by the content.
  4. In March 2021 the name of the table was updated from hous_1901_ew to be h_dens_1901_ew to more accurately reflect the content.

Checking:

  1. As the data were loaded, the total for each number of rooms was checked against the sum of the number of tenements with that number of rooks with 1 person, with 2 etc., and these data should be substantially free from error.
  2. To check the data on 'total tenements', totals for each county were computed and compared with those given in table 19 of Census of England and Wales 1901. Summary Tables. Area, Houses and Population [Cd. 1523]. This procedure also meant that any missing units were located. However, it revealed two fundamental inconsistencies: Firstly, the total given in the national totals for Warwickshire was 20 less than the computed total for the districts of the county. Secondly, the total number of tenements reported for the London Borough of Westminster in the national summary tables was greater than that given in the county report for London by 100. In both cases, the figures in our table are those that appear in the county reports.
  3. The 'over_1', 'over_1_5' and 'over_2' fields were computed by us from the data. Our calculations assume that tenements occupied by '12 or more' persons contained 12 people, and are therefore obviously underestimates. NB the General Report to the census itself defined over-crowding as more than 2 persons per room.
  4. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other datasets.
