Contents:
Scottish Housing Statistics (persons per room) from the 1951 Census.
Approx. number of rows:
625
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Paula Aucott
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1951.

Sources:

  1. This table is a partial transcription of table 21 ('Houses: Population by Number Enumerated per Room') in the individual county reports of the 1951 Census for Scotland.
  2. It includes national total data for Scotland transcribed from Table 56 in vol. III of Scottish census reports, "Households: Density of Occupation in Counties, Cities, Large Burghs. Aggregates of Small Burghs and Landward Areas".
  3. These data were entered by Harold Price in Portsmouth in Spring 2016.

Notes:

  1. A partial transcription of these tables were entered to give as accurate a match as possible to the England and Wales data. All columns containing counts of people were entered, those containing percentages were not.
  2. The data covers Cities, Wards, Counties, Burghs and Districts of County, and certain aggregates as indicated by area_type:
    • Nation (1 area): i.e. Scottish national total.
    • City (4 areas): Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
    • Ward (84 areas): Sub-divisions of the four cities.
    • County (33 areas): Includes data for all burghs, whether or not separately listed, but not data for Cities.
    • Large Burgh (29 areas): These match those listed in the 1951 Industry Table.
    • Small Burgh (201 areas).
    • District of County (199 areas).
    • Landward (33 areas).
    • Aggregates (14 areas) giving totals for Large Burghs and Small Burghs where they are differentiated.
  3. Note given on the table '"2-3" means "More than 2 but not more than 3" and "3-4" means "more than 3 but not more than 4"'.
  4. The rows giving totals for the 4 cities have been duplicated and added to the table again as data for the burghs of the same name. This is to ensure consistency in the mapping on A Vision of Britain through Time. Please ignore these rows for all other purposes.
  5. In March 2021 the name of the table was updated from hous_1951_s to be h_dens_1951_s to more accurately reflect the content.

Checking:

  1. The data was checked in excel to ensure the population in private houses figure given matched the combined total of all columns counting persons living (per room).
  2. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets. Only the rows which are totals for Large burghs, Small burghs and 1931 county and city figures have not been assigned g_unit values
  3. The county totals given in the table are the sum of all the large and small burghs and Districts of County. While the County Landwards have also been assigned g_unit values they give the same totals as the Districts of County and should not be included in county sums. City totals match the sum of the wards within that city.
  4. The totals for individual large and small burghs within a county have each been manually checked in excel and compared to the total for each group given per county. They are all correct except for the counties of Dunbarton, Dumfries and Ayr. In these three counties the figures for individual large or small burghs do not add up to the total given for either Large burghs or Small burghs. However, if all burghs within the county are summed together and compared with the sum of the two totals for that county they do match. This needs further investigation.
