Table type:

Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Administrative County
   Local Government District
   Local Government District Type
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1961.

Sources:

  1. This table was transcribed from table 19 in the county reports of the 1961 census, 'Population in all Private Households by Density of Occupation (persons per room).'
  2. It also contains national totals transcribed from Table 12, "Population in Private Households by Density of Occupation (persons per room)", on p.146 of Housing Tables Part I: Buildings, Dwellings and Households". These national data do not include the percentages.

Notes:

  1. The table is restricted to households in which at least one member was present on Census night.
  2. The header information to this table noted that: 'The rates in the percentage living at over 1.5 persons per room in 1961 have been derived from table 11 of the 1961 Census County Report and relate to areas as constituted at the date of the 1961 Census. Areas affected by subsequent boundary changes have only approximate, or in some cases no figures.'
  3. This table was originally called hous1961 and was a combination of the English and Welsh data. This was amended in February 2010 and is now called h_dens_1961_ew to reflect more accurately the area covered by the content.
  4. In March 2021 the name of the table was updated from hous_1961_ew to be h_dens_1961_ew to more accurately reflect the content.

Checking:

  1. The total population column was checked against the populations living at different densities, and the percentage living at over 1.5 persons per room in 1961 was also checked. The percentage living at over 1.5 persons per room in 1961 could not be checked.
  2. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
  3. This table transcription has no row given for Kirkby UD (10173620) in Lancashire. The AUO states this unit was created in 1958. The original table needs to be consulted to confirm whether it really is missing.
