Contents:
Scottish Housing Statistics (persons per room) from the 1961 Census.
Approx. number of rows:
406
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Paula Aucott
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1961.

Sources:

  1. This table was transcribed from table 19 in the county reports of the 1961 census, 'Population in all Private Households by Density of Occupation (persons per room)' by either 'County of City, City Wards' or ' County, Large Burghs, Small Burghs, Districts of County, New Towns.' These data were transcribed by Rachel Granville in Portsmouth in Summer 2002.
  2. This table is a partial transcription. All county figures, totals for types of district and the breakdown of large burghs into households comprising number of persons are not transcribed.
  3. The table also includes a similarly selective transcription of the overall national totals listed in Table 12, "Population in all Private Households by Density of Occupation (persons per room)", on page 82 of volume 4 of the 1961 reports, Housing and Households. These data were added by Humphrey Southall in June 2017.

Notes:

  1. The table is restricted to households in which at least one member was present on Census night.
  2. The header information to this table noted that: 'The percentages entered in column j (living at over 1.5 persons per room in 1951) relate to areas as constituted in 1951'. Areas affected by subsequent boundary changes have only approximate, or in some cases no figures.
  3. The Central Clydeside Conurbation is given as a separate row but its figures are also included in the overall totals for the City of Glasgow.
  4. The city wards are given in the table but these have not been transcribed.
  5. The table contains data for seven types of area, identified by values of 'dist_type'. All areas of these types have been consistently matched to the AUO:
    • CT = City (4 areas): Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
    • DC = District of County (197 areas).
    • LBu = Large Burgh (17 areas): Other main towns.
    • SBu = Small Burgh (174 areas): small towns.
    • LD = CLandward (2 areas): Remainders of counties, excluding the Burghs, Nairn and Kinross.
    • NT = New Town (3 areas): Cumbernauld, East Kilbride, Glenrothes.
    • CON = Conurbation: (1 area), Central Clydeside N.B. Within Scotland unit ID, not Lanarkshire.
  6. The rows giving totals for the 4 cities have been duplicated and added to the table again as data for the burghs of the same name. This is to ensure consistency in the mapping on A Vision of Britain through Time. Please ignore these rows for all other purposes.
  7. In March 2021 the name of the table was updated from h_dens_1961_s to be h_dens_1961_s to more accurately reflect the content.

Checking:

  1. The total population column was checked against the sum of the populations living at different densities.
  2. The percentage given of persons living at over 1.5 persons per room in 1961 was also checked against a percentage calculated from the total population and density over 1.5 persons per room columns. The percentage living at over 1.5 persons per room in 1951 could not be checked.
  3. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
  4. Data for three large burghs, DUMFRIES (Dumfriesshire), CLYDEBANK and DUMBARTON (both Dunbartonshire) were all missing from the original transcription. This error has been corrected and data for these units added to the table.
