The data are for the single year 1971.

Sources:

1. This table was transcribed from table 24 in the county reports of the 1971 census of Scotland, 'Persons in permanent buildings by density of occupation (persons per room)' for either 'County of city, city wards' or 'County, local authority areas'.
2. This table was transcribed by Rachel Granville in Portsmouth in summer 2002. The transcription excludes the percentages included in the original table as they easily calculated.

Notes:

1. This table contains data for the following types of area:
   • CT = City (4 areas): Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
   • DC = District of County (196 areas).
   • LB: Large Burgh (21 areas).
   • LW: Landward (2 areas): These are for Banff and Kinross, very small counties not divided into Districts of County.
   • NT: New Town (5 areas): Cumbernauld, East Kilbride, Glenrothes, Irvine and Livingston.
   • SB: Small Burgh (176 areas).
2. County totals can be computed by summing by county IDs while excluding rows where area_type = 'NT'.
3. 'This table is restricted to households of which at least one member was present at Census.'
4. The rows giving totals for the 4 cities have been duplicated and added to the table again as data for the burghs of the same name. This is to ensure consistency in the mapping on A Vision of Britain through Time. Please ignore these rows for all other purposes.
5. In March 2021 the name of the table was updated from hous_1971_s to be h_dens_1971_s to more accurately reflect the content.

Checking:

1. The total population column was checked against the sum of the populations living at different densities.
2. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
