The data are for the single year 1991.

Sources:

1. The data are from Table S23, "Persons per room: Households with residents; residents in households [100%]", in the 1991 Small Area Statistics, and were downloaded from the NOMIS online system on 31st July 2016. The data include all the listed densities, but the original table on NOMIS is a cross-tabulation against tenure type.

Notes:

1. Note that the data, both as held on NOMIS and as stored here, do not include densities between 0.5 and 1 person per room as a category, so this needs to be calculated as a residual.
2. In March 2021 the name of the table was updated from hous_1991_gb_ward to be h_dens_1991_gb_ward to more accurately reflect the content.

ward_name	Text string (max.len.=58).	Name of ward given in the data.
geogcode	Text string (max.len.=16).	These are six-character alphanumeric codes defined by ONS, and identify "Frozen" 1991 Wards. The documentation supplied by NOMIS says: "Wards are defined by the Local Government Commissions, and reviews take place on a rolling basis. ONS uses the wards in place at the time of the Census of Population as building blocks for other geographies. Currently, these are 1991 wards. These frozen wards allow the ONS to produce time series on a fixed geographic base. The UK has 11,330 frozen 1991 wards. Ward population counts can vary substantially, even within a single local authority, but the national average is about 5500. More populous electoral wards tend to occur in large urban areas".
