Sources:

  7. The data for 1961 were taken from the Annual Report of the Registrar-General for Scotland 1961, no. 107 (Edinburgh: HMSO, 1963), Table 56, "Causes of Death and Ages at Death in Scotland, the Cities, Large Burghs, Small Burghs and Landward Areas - 1961" (pp. 366-388). The format is similar to 1951 but appears different because the causes of death are only listed on the first page and are subsequently identified only by code numbers. This table does not include data on births, so these have been added from Table 7, "Vital Statistics and Population, Scotland, Counties of Cities, Large and Small Burghs and Landward Areas, Numbers and Rates -- 1961", in the same report. For both births and stillbirths, the data are "corrected for usual residence".
  8. The data for 1971 were taken from the Annual Report of the Registrar-General for Scotland 1971, no. 117 (Edinburgh: HMSO, 1973), Part I, Mortality Statistics, Table C2.16, "Deaths, by age, cause and local authority area, Scotland, 1971" (pp.252-71). This table differs from the earlier ones in containing no information on numbers of births or stillbirths, so this information is taken from Table A2.2, "Estimated home population, number of births, stillbirths and deaths, stillbirth and death rates, by local authority area, Scotland 1971", on pp.37-9 of Part I of the 1971 Annual Report.

Notes:

  1. This data was input by the digitisation team at the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis, Queen's University, Belfast.
  2. The geographical is essentially for all Burghs plus County Districts in 1921 and 1930, and for all Burghs and a single County Landward in 1931 and all later years. County totals are almost always included. Overall national totals are included for 1931, 1941, 1950, 1951, 1961 and 1971.
  3. This data was produced on an annual basis. CDDA only completed transcriptions for census years and specific other dates. NB the transcription for 1950 is only about one-third complete.
  4. The original 'area type' column description includes a note claiming an exception for the number of counties being 33 occurs in "1971, where Aberdeenshire is simply missing." The Aberdeen data does now appear to be included in the table, so the note has been removed.

Checking:

  1. The reported total for deaths of all ages has been checked against the sum of all individual age groups.
  2. The reported county totals for births, marriages and deaths have been compared with the sums of the data for Burghs, County Districts and Landwards.
  3. At the time of writing (January 2017), the data for 1931, 1951, 1961 and 1971 have been checked and corrected against the original reports to enable their use in redistricting work. However, a few rows for 1921 and 1930, and many of the rows for 1941 fail the above checks. Work is also needed to consistently identify the four cities separately from the counties.

Columns within table:

ColumnTypeContents
year Integer number. Year.
sco_cnty Text string (max.len.=34). Name of Scottish County to which data relate.
area_name Text string (max.len.=104). Name of the area to which data relate.
area_type Text string (max.len.=22). The following values appear:
  • Burgh: From 1931 onwards these seem to be always Small or Large Burghs, but for earlier dates they have various statuses.
  • County District: Listed only for 1930 and earlier. These are presumably Registration Districts, and cannot currently be matched to the AUO, but have been included in checking.
  • Landward: i.e. county totals for all areas outside Burghs. Listed for all dates 1931 and later.
  • City: i.e. Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. These are currently distinguished only in certain years.
  • County: There are exactly 33 of these in all years except 1950, where only 13 counties have been transcribed.
  • Nation: i.e. national total for Scotland. Currently included for 1931, 1941, 1950 and 1951.
  • Total: There are five rows so labelled, all being 1951 national totals for different categories of area.
  • Unallocated: this appears once, for 1941 data for 'Unallocated deaths' in Shetland, which presumably could not be allocated to either Lerwick or the Landward.
