  1. The data are a full transcription of data for females in Table 17, 'Occupations (Condensed List) of Males and Females aged 14 years and over showing also the total "Operatives" and the total "Out of Work" for Urban Areas with Populations not exceeding 50,000 and Rural Districts', pp.426-583 in Census, 1931: Classification of Occupations (London: HMSO, 1934).
  2. These data were originally input by CDDA in 1999, but were extensively re-organised and re-checked for errors by Humphrey Southall in April 2001.

Notes:

  1. The source table lists different information for men and for women, the former being held here in 'occ_1931_sm_m'. The occupational orders and categories used here are the same as in the data for towns over 50,000 population, held in 'occ_1931_lg_t', but drastically simplified. The derived table 'occ_1931' holds systematic summary information for both sexes in ALL local government districts.
  2. While the 1931 occupational data for men in smaller towns do list totals for all but two occupational orders (XX and XXI being grouped together), the data for women fail to distinguish many industrial orders.
  3. Column 'i_xi_other' contains the total for orders I to XI, i.e.:
    • I Fishermen.
    • II Agricultural occupations.
    • III Mining and quarrying occupations.
    • IV Makers of coal, gas, lime, etc.
    • V Makers of bricks, pottery, glass.
    • VI Workers in chemicals, paints, etc.
    • VII Metal workers.
    • VIII Workers in precious metals.
    • IX Electrical apparatus makers, fitters.
    • X Makers of watches, clocks, etc.
    • XI Workers in skins; leather goods makers.
    Note, however, that the orders listed above in bold are separately identifiable within the table. Confusingly, they are listed not as orders but as sequences of individual occupational categories which in fact precisely cover whole orders.
  4. Column 'xviii_xxi_build_other' contains the total for orders XVIII to XXI, i.e.:
    • XVIII Builders, bricklayers, etc.
    • XIX Painters and decorators, etc.
    • XX Workers in other materials.
    • XXI Workers in mixed or undefined materials.
  5. Column 'xxx_xxxi_engine_other' contains the total for orders XXX to XXI, i.e.:
    • XXX Stationary engine drivers, etc.
    • XXXI Other and undefined workers.
  6. The table includes data for the Civil Parish of Folkestone next Sandgate, which was legally part of BOTH Folkestone MB and Sandgate UD. Notes to the table say its data was included in Folkestone but not in Sandgate, but the row of data for the parish itself has been deliberately left with null values of g_unit and admc_unit so that it is not included in overall totals.

Checking:

  1. The total population aged over 14 ('tot_o14') was compared with the sum of the occupied ('tot_occ') and unoccupied ('xxxii_unocc').
  2. The total occupied was compared with the sum of the available totals for occupational orders, i.e. i_xi_other, xii_textile, xiii_clothing, xiv_food_drink, xv_wood, xvi_paper, xvii_print, xviii_xxi_build_other, xxii_transport, xxiv_publ_admin, xxv_profession, xxvi_entertain, xxvii_pers_serv, xxviii_clerks, xxix_warehouse and xxx_xxxi_engine_other.
  3. The selected occupational sub-groupings within the table were checked and corrected by Humphrey Southall in April 2001, by systematic comparison of the reported totals for Administrative Counties held in 'occ_1931_lg_t' and computed county totals taken from this table.
  4. Following this additional checking, the data should be error free with the exception of the following unresolvable problems due to printing errors in the original report (each problem was double-checked, and the reported county total also re-checked). These problems are limited to the sub-groupings, all the orders being error free. NB these errors were identified by comparing reported and actual county totals, and the computed totals necessarily include figures for the large towns held in 'occ_1931_lg_t', but the errors must be in the small town data because there were other checks on the data for counties and large towns.
    • The computed total number of 'operatives' for Devon was greater than the reported total by 6.
    • The computed total number of 'operatives' for the West Riding of Yorkshire was less than the reported total by 500. This is much the largest error found in the table and was checked particularly carefully. In particular, the relationship between the total occupied and total operatives was carefully examined for each individual district; none seemed anomalous, so it seems likely that it is the county total which is overstated, not the figure for one individual district which is understated. This is reassuring as the impact of the latter on rates could be far more serious.
    • The computed total of shop assistants ('XXIII_700_SHOP_ASS') for the North Riding of Yorkshire is greater than the reported total by 1.
