Contents:
1991 unemployment rates interpolated onto 1898 Registration Districts
Approx. number of rows:
636
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Humphrey Southall
Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Registration District
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1991.

Sources:

  1. These data originated as Enumeration District-level data from the 1991 census, as supplied by the Office of National Statistics. However, they have been assembled into 1898 Registration Districts.

Notes:

  1. This data set was constructed as a part of research into long-run trends in geographical inequality in England and Wales, prepared for the 1998 conference marking the 100th anniversary of Rowntree's famous study of poverty in York; see Ian Gregory et al, 'A Century of Poverty in England and Wales, 1898-1998: A Geographical Analysis', pp.130-59 in J. Bradshaw and R. Sainsbury, Researching Poverty (Aldershot: Ashgate, 2000). This explains the use of 1898 Registration Districts as the target areas.
  2. Danny Dorling first re-allocated the ED-level data to 1981 wards. The ward-level data were then re-allocated to 1898 Registration Districts by allocating each ward to the RD within which most of it lay.
  3. Information on persons on training schemes, and the long-term sick is included on the grounds that many of these represented concealed unemployment.
  4. This table has been built in Postgres, but no matching to the AUO has been attempted.

Checking:

  1. These data are as supplied by Danny Dorling; no checking possible.

Acknowledgments:
