Population statistics from the 1939 National Register
Approx. number of rows:

Table type:

Documentation Author:

Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Administrative County
   Local Government District
   Local Government District Type
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1939.

Sources:

  1. The data were transcribed from table 1, 'Population and Acreage in the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man', pp.1-37 in National Register: United Kingdom and Isle of Man: Statistics of Population on 29th September, 1939 By Sex, Age and Marital Condition: Report and Tables (London: HMSO, 1944).
  2. This is a complete transcription for England and Wales, except for the columns giving numbers and percentage increase 1931 to 1939, which can easily be computed. Data for Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man have not been input.

Notes:

  1. The 1939 National Register is the best available substitute for the 1941 census which never happened due to WWII. It was carried out at the outbreak of war and used the same machinery that would have been used for the 1941 census.
  2. These data were input by Paula Aucott at Portsmouth, December 2000.
  3. This table was previously called pop_lgd_1939 when it was held in Oracle. The name was amended to more accurately reflect the content in 2016.

Checking:

  1. The sum of the numbers of males and of females from the 1931 census was checked against the stated total number of persons.
  2. The sum of the numbers of males and of females from the 1939 National Register was checked against the stated total number of persons.
  3. The original documentation for this table says the acreage of each district, and the estimated 1938 population, was summed for each county and compared with the reported total. The totals were compared against the age_lgd_1939 table data. The only discrepancy was for Gwyrfai RD in Caernarvonshire (10194441). This unit had a difference of one between the total population in the two tables. It also had a difference of one between the given total population and the computed total for males and females combined in the popl_lgd_1939_ew table.
  4. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. Each unit in this table has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this ID can be used to cross-reference against other datasets.
