Data taken from the 1851 Census of Religious Worship for Scotland
Approx. number of rows:
693
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Paula Aucott
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1851.

Sources:

  1. Data are taken from Census of Great Britain, 1851. Religious Worship and Education. Scotland. Report and Tables, 1854. Specifically, this is a selective transcription of Table A, giving national totals, and a complete transcription of Table B 'Places of Worship, Sittings and Attendances, in Counties' and Table C 'Accommodation and Attendance in Burghs, or Parishes which contain Burghs'.
  2. County and burgh data were computerised by the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis at Queens' University, Belfast in May 2001. The national totals were added in March 2017 at Portsmouth by Humphrey Southall.
  3. The original tables include extensive footnotes, but they have not been computerised.
  4. This is a full transcription of the printed tables save county and burgh subtotals.

Notes:

  1. Please note this table contains data for two different spatial coverages - counties and burghs. The burgh coverage gives data only for areas covered by burghs and contains less statistics. The county data includes statistics for all of Scotland and includes the data given for burghs, so if burgh and county data were to be summed double counting would result. The county data are richer than the burgh data.
  2. Please also note that, as indicated in the source information, data come from two separate printed tables. As such the information available for each spatial level in each field varies. See the field descriptions for precise information on what they contain and at which spatial level.
  3. Belfast were unsure of the census geography used in this table, hence they used the x_ prefix with geographical fields. These have now been updated to cnty_name, area_name and area_type.
  4. The data covers the following area types:
    • Nation (1 area) National totals
    • County (33 areas) figures include burghs
    • PC: Parliamentary City (3 areas): Aberdeen, Perth and Glasgow
    • MB: Municipal Burgh (1 area): Kilmarnock
    • PB: Parliamentary Burgh (33 areas)
    • RB: Royal Burgh (15 areas)
    • TW: Town (1 area): Girvan
  5. The Scottish Burgh types in the gazetteer for the nineteenth century are very incomplete. While the burghs have been assigned g_unit values from the GBHGIS Administrative Unit Gazetteer, these matches should not be considered final.
    • PC have been matched to gazetteer Royal Burghs (RoBu)
    • RB have been matched to gazetteer Royal Burghs (RoBu)
    • PB have been matched to gazetteer Police Burghs (PoBu)
    • MB has been matched to a gazetteer Police Burgh (PoBu)
    • TW has been matched to a gazetteer Burgh of Barony (BuBa)
N.B. The burgh types given in this table do not match the Town Districts given in the 1851 age structure table.

Checking:

  1. Data were checked by summing each numeric field and comparing the sum with the total (for each county or burgh) in the printed table. Printed sums were given for all numeric data given in the table.
  2. An attempt has been made to match the areas to the GBHGIS Administrative unit gazetteer. The national and county rows all match and have g_unit values. N.B. County rows have no type given.
  3. Problems with nineteenth century Scottish burgh type information means their g_unit values are provisional (see notes above).
  4. Dumfermline was listed as being in a county of the same name. This information is not in the original table so seems to have been added erroneously at some point. County name replaced with Fife.
  5. Edinburgh and Leigh Parliamentary Burghs are combined in this table, but they are separate burghs in the gazetteer. This row cannot currently be matched to the AUO and the g_unit value is therefore blank.
  6. The denomination names have been cross-checked against those given for England and Wales and the original reports. A few minor typos have been corrected, including "Presbyterian Original Session Church" has been corrected to be "Presbyterian Original Secession Church" and "Free Church" to be "Free Presbyterian Church".
