General Election Results 1885-1917 plus 1881 Socio-Economic Statistics
Approx. number of rows:

Table type:
Derived
Documentation Author:
Humphrey Southall
Chronology:
The data cover the period 1885 to 1917.

Sources:

  1. The electoral data have been extracted from the main g_data table. The current socio-economic statistics are derived entirely from the occ_1881_no_age table, using the associated codebooks to aggregate the individual occupations into both social classes and industries. A geography conversion table is then used to re-group the data by constituency.

Notes:

  1. This table was constructed to support a collaborative research project between Humphrey Southall and Daniel Ziblatt (Harvard).
  2. The table holds both voting statistics and socio-economic data for all constituencies in England and Wales, but in urban areas the socio-economic data are likely to be simplistic because th these areas there were sometimes more constituencies than parishes. In cities such as Birmingham, with multiple constituencies but just one parish, all constituencies will have identical socio-economic data.
  3. Election results are now grouped into a special set of categories designed for this particular period by Daniel Ziblatt, consisting of:
    • Conservative: Includes 'Independent Conservative'.
    • Liberal Unionist: Includes 'Independent Liberal Unionist' and 'Liberal (Liberal Unionist)'.
    • Liberal: Includes 'Independent Liberal'.
    • Labour: Includes 'Independent Labour', 'Independent Labour Party', and 'Labour (Liberal-Labour)'.
    • Lib-Lab: Includes 'Independent Liberal/Labour'.
    • Other: All other party labels, including 'Social Democratic Federation'.
