In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Stocksbridge like this:
Stocksbridge, town, Ecclesfield and Penistone pars., S. div. West-Riding Yorkshire, 1½ mile W. of Deepcar sta. and 7½ m. NAV of Sheffield, pop. 4660; P.O.; is a local government district, and a seat of steel-wire works.
