In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Rugos like this:

RHIGOS, a hamlet in Ystradyfodwg parish, Glamorgan; 10 miles S W of Merthyr-Tydvil. Real property, £1, 752; of which £100 are in mines, and £350 in railway s. Pop. in 1851, 1,047; in 1861, 822. Houses, 154. The decrease of pop. arose from the stoppage of the Hirwain iron-works.
