In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Northowram like this:

OWRAM (North), a village, a township, and a sub-district, in Halifax parish and district, W. R. Yorkshire. The village stands 2 miles N E of Halifax; is a large place; and has a post-office under Halifax. The township contains also the villages of Boothtown, Shibden, and Queens-Head, and part of the borough of Halifax. ...


Acres, 3, 400. Real property, £47, 508; of which £1, 400 are in mines, and £2, 971 in quarries. Pop. in 1851, 15, 285; in 1861, 16, 178. Houses, 3, 445. Pop. of the part within Halifax borough, in 1861, 5, 334. Houses, 1, 118. The rural parts contain Upper Hough House, Bankfield, the Grange, Horley-Green, Salterlee, Under-cliff, Lower Brea, and other good residences. There are several worsted mills, card manufactories, a silk mill, collieries, extensive stone quarries, and a mineral spring. A church is at Hill-Top; was erected in 1861; and consists of nave, aisles, N transept, and chancel, with a lofty spire. Another church is at Haley-Hill, within Halifax borough. There are chapels for Independents, Baptists, Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists, and New Connexion Methodists. An endowed school, for educating 12 poor children, is at Boothtown; and alms-houses, founded in 1647, also are there.—The sub-district contains also Shelf township. Acres, 4, 750. Pop. in 1851, 18, 699; in 1861, 19, 240. Houses, 4, 101.
